PUBLIC QUESTION TIME
Resident
“Under the Sustainability program you state you have consulted the community yet only 31 community members provided feedback and only 20 responses on the feedback page . Where and how was it made common knowledge to all Maroondah residents about the sustainability project and why is the Council adopting the UN plan when they are not part of our governance in Australia from Federal to State to Local Government , they are not a governing body in any capacity nor are they even elected body.
Can the council confirm why they are following the UN unelected body policy and will all of the UN agendas be adhered to as in there white paper on the smart city 20 minute neighborhoods program how far does the Maroondah council in tend to go with this pilot program.”
Director Strategy and Development
“Council adopted its Sustainability Strategy 2022-2031 at the 29 August 2022 Council Meeting. The contents of the Draft Strategy were communicated broadly across the Maroondah community in April to May 2022. The specifics of the community consultation is provided in the related 29 August Council Meeting report; and included:
· Social media campaigns
· Promotion through Council publications and on our website
· And through in person engagements.
Maroondah’s Sustainability Strategy has 6 key pillars or outcome areas with associated actions. None of these six outcome areas replicate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, nor has Council adopted the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals or plan.”
Resident
Belmont Road East
“In light of increasing cost of living pressures on residents, what is the Maroondah council doing about reducing the council rates for residents?”
Chief Financial Officer
“Council is cognisant of cost-of-living pressures that currently exist.
Council rates are governed within the State Government rate cap environment and Council has no intention to go outside of that and never has done so. Whilst it is worth noting that the rate cap for 23/24 is well below current and predicted inflation levels.
Additionally, Council has a financial hardship policy documented on its website that can assist those specific individuals working through financial hardship pressures.”
