PUBLIC QUESTION TIME

Question: Mr Woody Marriott, 34 Stoda St Heathmont

“What is Council doing about homeslessness, please?”

Response: Phil Turner, Director Planning & Community

“Council has a “Protocol for Assisting People Sleeping Rough in Public Places” (internal document) that outlines a process for Council Officers (Local Laws) to follow when reports of homelessness occur.  The process includes how to provide information on supports/services in Maroondah.

Council also facilitates the Maroondah Emergency Relief Network which meets quarterly.  These agencies (approximately 24) provide information, support, meals and assistance to vulnerable people, including those who are homeless.  Council has developed a brochure of community meals and emergency relief agencies.

Several emergency relief agencies have also received support from Council in the past via our Community Grants funding program. Council has also provided land for emergency housing.

Council is also looking at ways to assist with housing affordability through its own policy’s and strategies and through the Eastern Affordable Housing Alliance.

Since March 2015, Council has been aware of increasing numbers of people being reported as ‘sleeping rough’ and we have commenced recording these incidents in Pathway, (our electronic reporting system) so that Council officers can respond appropriately and in a timely manner.

Where appropriate, we liaise with other services including SalvoCare and various other support agencies as per the process in Council’s Protocol.”
